Join our Survey Team on one on-site field outing to find our most abundant native terrestrial amphibian, the Eastern Red-Backed Salamander! Led by the Herpetology Curator, the Salamander Survey Team checks survey plots on the VLM's wild property twice per month between October and April to search for these small forest dwelling salamanders. Any animals captured are measured, marked with a unique identifier, and released back to their point of capture. The goal of this project is to provide long-term monitoring data for this salamander, which is a very important part of the forest floor ecosystem. The individual markings will provide a means to track movements, survival, and social interactions of recaptured animals.
